At that moment a merchant coming along the great highroad saw her true form as she bewailed herself — 'I am one of such evil karma!' — and, understanding all that had happened, drew near and called her 'O lotus peacock!'
The verse shows the merchant's arrival. The hunter saw a divine face and desired; the merchant sees her true state and pities: one sight, two outcomes.
Subtly, calling her a lotus-peacock names her beauty in a word, though that beauty has now faded.

One sight stirs desire in one and pity in another.
