Meaning

O lord of the seashore, where the folded waves bring pearls to the bank and swift-prowed ships are tossed against it — if those one cannot give up turn out to be of another nature, they are a fire kindled to burn the heart.

Explanation

The shore scene opens first: folded waves setting pearls down on the bank, swift ships tossed against it. After that restless beauty comes the human fact.

'Those hard to give up' are the ones so close that one cannot let them go. When such a person becomes a stranger to his own nature — acting against what he was — the fire is not one carried in from outside: it is kindled inside the heart. The sharpness of the verse is that the fuel is our own affection.

To reflect on

The one you cannot let go is the one who can set your heart alight.
