Meaning

Though it breaks the bank in anger, those who live craving the water do not fall out with it; they resist it and dam it in again. However hatefully it behaves, the bond with those one has chosen for oneself is borne.

Explanation

The verse puts a farmer and his water in front of us. The water has broken the bank — a wrong done to him, plainly. Yet he does not fall out with the water, for one reason: his life is lived by craving that water. So instead of anger he stands against it, resists, and builds the bank again.

Then the comparison falls. 'The bond with those one chose for oneself.' A friend too may one day do something hateful. But the man who chose him does not cast him off; he mends the breach and lets the water flow again. The way with a bond your life rests on is not to cut it but to set it right.

To reflect on

The way with a bond one chose is not to cut it but to mend the bank and let it flow again.
