Meaning

O lord of the cool shore of shining water, even though they cause pain, the noble do not go looking for fault once they have mingled. Those who, having mingled, raise the wrong again with hard cleverness are themselves lower than the one they blame.

Explanation

The verse does not ask that a friend's fault be forgotten; it asks that it not be hunted out and spoken of. 'Those who do not hunt for fault' are the noble. Once two people have mingled, dredging up the flaw is no way to keep the friendship.

On the other side the verse turns severe. The one who, after the mingling, raises the wrong again is called a man without firm wisdom — unbending, hardened cleverness; and he ranks lower than the person he blames. Here the meanness belongs not to the one who did the wrong but to the one who digs it up and talks of it.

To reflect on

After a bond is made, the fault-finder ranks lower than the one who caused the fault.
