Meaning

Like people who lie in an old hut with a gaping roof, the mud for a bed, bailing out the water as it leaks in, are those who stay beside you only until their own business is finished. O lord of the good land where foaming falls pour down the dark hills, have no such friends.

Explanation

A man who shelters in a leaking hut leaves the moment the rain stops. One who sticks to you only for his own needs is the same.

False friendship ends when the need ends.

The Mahabharata, Adi Parva

The House of Lac

From the Mahabharata. Duryodhana, pretending friendship, invited the Pandavas and Kunti to a festival at Varanavata and had his minister Purochana build them a fine new house to stay in. It was made of lac, resin and ghee, ready to burn.

Vidura saw through the welcome and warned Yudhishthira in a riddle that only he would understand. The Pandavas had a tunnel dug in secret, and on the night Purochana planned to set the fire, they lit it themselves and escaped through the earth. A warm welcome from someone who wishes you harm is the most dangerous house of all.

To reflect on

Friendship that ends with the need was never friendship.
