Meaning

One who claims deeds he never did, and puts off what he should do by shuffling the day along, will find that the very nature which truly gives pleasure turns, for those he has slighted, into a nature that gives pain at the same level.

Explanation

The verse describes one kind of friend. He claims deeds he never did, and puts off what he ought to do with 'today, tomorrow,' letting the time run out. There is no outright lie in it; the hours are simply spent. That spending is the deceit.

Then the verse states a rule. If a man's nature truly gives delight, that same nature, once it has been slighted, will give pain at the same level. The retaliation does not come from outside; the size of the nature is the size of the recoil. So such a friendship is sweet at the beginning and bitter in exactly the same measure at the end.

To reflect on

The sweetness of a friendship is also the measure of the harm it can do.
