பொருள்
பெருகுவது போலத் தோன்றி, தீ போல ஒரு பொழுதும் நில்லாது அழிந்துவிடும். அருகெல்லாம் சந்தனச் சோலை சூழ்ந்த சாரலையுடைய மலைநாடனே, பந்தம் இல்லாதவர் தொடர்பு அத்தகையதே.
Meaning
It appears to swell and grow, then like fire it will not last even a moment, and is gone. O lord of the hills whose slopes are ringed with long sandal groves — so is the company of those who have no bond.

பாடல் ஒரு தோற்றத்தைப் பேசுகிறது. முதலில் அது பெருகுகிறது போல் இருக்கும் — பரந்து வளர்வது போல், நிலைத்துவிடும் போல். ஆனால் அது தீ போன்றது. தீ பற்றியது பெரிதாகத் தெரியும்; ஆனால் எரிபொருள் தீர்ந்தால், ஒரு பொழுதும் நில்லாது அவிந்து விடும்.

Explanation
The verse speaks of an appearance. At first it seems to swell and spread, as though it would last. But it is like fire. A fire looks great when it takes hold; yet once its fuel is spent it is gone in a moment.
What such a friendship lacks is not closeness or warmth; it is 'bond' — a tie that binds. A bond is the duty a person has taken on towards another. A tie with no duty comes quickly and goes quickly. The steady fragrance of the sandal groves belongs to that hill country; and the verse implies that for one born in such a land only a steady bond is fitting.
