Meaning

Those whom one has taken up with deep affection, counting them good — even if they turn out otherwise, they must be kept and borne. Rice has its husk; water has its froth; even a flower has its thin outer petal.

Explanation

The verse opens with a choice already made: those counted good and taken up with deep affection. That affection did not rise on the surface; it came from inside the mind. Because of that, the verse says, even when the choice turns out to have been mistaken they are not to be thrown off altogether — they are to be kept and borne.

Then three small truths arrive. Every grain of paddy carries husk; every stretch of water carries froth; and though it mars the colour, a flower has its thin outer petal. The world does not throw a thing away for the part of it that serves nothing. Every good thing comes with its lack attached, and cutting off a chosen friendship for that lack is not wisdom.

The Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda

Sugriva Forgets His Promise

From the Ramayana. Rama had killed Vali and given Sugriva back his kingdom and his wife. Sugriva promised that when the rains ended he would send his armies to search for Sita. The rains ended, and Sugriva, lost in pleasure, forgot.

Rama was grieved, and Lakshmana stormed into Kishkindha in a rage. Tara calmed him; Sugriva came out ashamed and begged forgiveness. Rama embraced him, spoke no word of reproach, and together they began the search that found Sita. A friend's lapse, forgiven, did not end the friendship; it made it stronger.

To reflect on

There is no paddy without husk, and no friendship without a flaw.
