Meaning

While a man is still unharmed they are like his own dear ones; the moment he gives himself over they become a broken stake. Women with the eyes of a deer, who keep to their own path, do not come to another's broad breast; they are the ones who say, 'we shall join the right path.'

Explanation

The axis of the verse is a shift in time: one state while the man is unharmed, another the moment he gives himself over. One person in two hours wears two forms — dear in the first, a broken stake in the second.

'A broken stake' is exact: once a staff breaks it can no longer be leaned on; it is only a stick lying there, no longer of use. Then the verse shows the opposite pole: the deer's look and keeping to one's own path. Steadiness comes from holding to one's own way, not from changing with another's position.

To reflect on

Steadiness comes of holding one's own way, not of shifting with another's.
