Meaning

Arrow, fire and the sun with its keen rays burn fiercely, but they burn only the outside. Desire burns the mind from within; that is why it is more to be feared than any of them.

Explanation

Three burning things scorch only the outside. The fourth — desire — burns the mind, and is therefore worse than all three.

The comparison is simple and exact. A wound on the body heals; a wound in the mind does not.

To reflect on

A wound outside heals; a wound in the mind does not.
