Explanation

Giving is measured in the heart, not in quantity. One who gives gladly even when poor is the true giver.

Kuchela brought Krishna only a handful of beaten rice, but it was given with love.

The Mahabharata, Vana Parva

Karna's Armour and Earrings

From the Mahabharata. Karna was born with golden armour and earrings that made him invincible. Indra, fearing for his son Arjuna, came to Karna disguised as a poor brahmin at the hour of Karna's noon worship, when Karna had vowed never to refuse anyone.

Surya had already warned Karna in a dream that this was a trap. Karna knew. He cut the armour from his own body and the earrings from his ears and placed them, bleeding, in the beggar's hands. Indra, ashamed, gave him a weapon in return. Karna lost his protection but gained a name that has lasted longer than any armour: Kodai Karnan, Karna the Giver.
