Meaning

He is the God of gods, unknown even to the king of the gods; the First One, Lord over the three others who create, protect and destroy the rich worlds; the very form of all; the ancient Father; our father, half of whose body is ruled by the Goddess; King of all. He came and took even me. We are subject to no one; we fear nothing. We have joined the servants of his servants, and ever more deeply we will plunge and dance.

Explanation

This verse recalls Appar's famous line, 'We are subject to no one, we do not fear Death', sung when a Pallava king summoned him. One who belongs to the Lord need fear no other power in the world.

Saiva Siddhanta calls the Lord the Pati above the three gods: those who create, protect and destroy all act at his command. Because such a Lord took him, the poet is fearless. The section on cutting away 'I and mine' ends with this cry of freedom.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.

To reflect on

Whom or what do you fear? What could free you from that fear?
