Meaning

If you ask, is there any wonder equal to this? He made me a servant of his devotees whose love runs high, took away my fear and took me as his own. With nectar welling up, he entered within so that my heart melted, and ruled me so that love overflowed. He is the Father; he became male, female and neither, became the sky, the great fire and the end, and stands beyond them all. His body is red like the vetchi flower. He is our Siva, my Lord, God, King.

Explanation

To be 'a servant of his servants' is a high state in Saiva tradition, higher even than being the Lord's own servant. That is why Sundarar began the Thiruthondathogai with 'I am the servant of the servants of the brahmins of Thillai'.

That the Lord becomes male, female and neither, and still stands beyond them all, is the teaching of Ardhanarishvara. He is the Father, and so the devotee's fear is gone.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.
