Angkan visumpin akanilaap paarikkum / Thingkalum saanroarum opparman - thingkal / Maruvaarrum, saanroarah thaarraar therumanthu / Thaeyvar orumaa surin.

Meaning

The moon in the wide sky and the noble are alike. But the moon bears its own stain, while the noble, if a single small fault touches them, cannot bear it and waste away in grief.

Explanation

The comparison ends with a turn. The moon is lovely and bears a stain; the noble cannot.

Whether this is praise or a burden is unclear. What the verse says is that a single fault presses on them from within.

The Bhagavata Purana, Book 9

Rantideva's Last Cup of Water

From the Bhagavata Purana. King Rantideva gave away everything he had until he and his family were starving. After forty-eight days without food, a little rice, milk and water came to them. Just as they sat to eat, a brahmin guest arrived, and Rantideva fed him first. Then a poor shudra came, then a man with a pack of hungry dogs, and he gave them all he had left.

Only a cup of water remained. An outcaste came to him, dying of thirst. Rantideva gave him the water, saying: "I do not ask for the eight powers or for freedom from rebirth. I ask only to take on the suffering of all beings so that they may be free of it." The guests revealed themselves as the gods. This is what the great are like.

To reflect on

One small fault weighs on the noble from within.
