Meaning

To live without asking even of those whose love is firm and whose look is kind — that is living. The very thought of begging melts the heart; what then must the mind of the giver be when the asking comes to him?

Explanation

The first statement sets a boundary: living means living without asking. And not asking even of those whose love is firm and whose look is as kind as one's own eye. For it is hardest to ask a loving person: he will not refuse, and his heart will grieve.

The second statement presses that feeling further: the mere thought melts the heart. Then what of the giver? The verse shows the pain of the asker and, at the same measure, the heart of the one asked. Begging is one person's want becoming another person's burden — for both of them.

To reflect on

Begging turns one person's need into another person's burden.
