Meaning

Give a young buffalo plucked grass, cut its feed short, tend it every day, and it still never learns the ornament of the plough; so too, though the base hold wealth, they are known by what they do.

Explanation

The scene is agricultural. A young buffalo is fed plucked grass and tended daily, and still it does not learn the plough. Feeding is not enough; nature matters too.

That picture is applied to the base man: wealth arrives and his conduct does not change. The ornament of the earth is the plough — and a person's ornament is his work. The verse keeps returning to one point: wealth does not adorn a man, his deeds do. The conclusion is severe, and the verse presents it as a nature that does not turn.

To reflect on

A person's ornament is his work, not his wealth.
