Meaning

Do not speak that great lie, bard — that the man of the bud-opening garland will show me grace. We are like the end joint of the sugarcane; so, of the man of that town, speak to those who are like the middle joint.

Explanation

One word in this verse is especially hard: 'a great lie'. The envoy's promise is not called an exaggeration; it is called a lie outright. She is certain there is not a grain of truth in the assurance that he will show her grace.

The sugarcane follows. The joints of one cane are not of one taste; each has its own nature. So too that praise is fit for a certain joint and not for her. She therefore sends it where it belongs. What she refuses here is not only the man; she refuses the envoy's falsehood as well.

To reflect on

Clarity is naming falsehood a falsehood instead of accepting it as praise.
