The Ramayana, Ayodhya KandaManthara's Whisper
From the Ramayana. Ayodhya was celebrating: Rama was to be crowned the next morning. Queen Kaikeyi rejoiced too, and gave a jewel to the maid who brought the news. But her old servant Manthara, watching the decorations from the palace roof, burned with spite.
She went to Kaikeyi and poured poison into her ear: Rama's rise would make Kaikeyi a servant and Bharata a nobody. Little by little the queen's joy turned to fear and then to anger, until she demanded her two old boons from Dasharatha: Bharata's crowning and Rama's exile. One mean heart, by whispering, brought grief on a whole kingdom.
