ஒருவர் விரும்பித் தம்மை வியக்கும்படி நடக்க, மற்றவர் 'நாங்கள் விரும்பவில்லை' என்று அமைந்திருக்கும் கேண்மை, பாயும் அலைகள் சூழ்ந்த உலகமே விளைந்தாலும், பண்பு இல்லாதார் மாட்டு இனியதாகாது.
Meaning
A friendship in which one courts and hopes to be admired while the other sits saying 'we were never eager' is wretched, even if the whole earth ringed with leaping waves should yield its increase — when it is with people who have no fineness in them.

Explanation
The scene is an unequal bond. One draws near with longing; the other keeps saying 'we were never eager'. It is a rope pulled from one end only.
No gain, the verse says, can sweeten such a friendship. The trouble is not substance but fineness of nature — worth that has to be searched out and known. Where that is missing, no wealth makes the bond sweet. The taste of a friendship is not in what is given but in both hearts being equally willing.
