Akaththaarae vaazhvaaren rannaanthu noakkip / Pukaththaam peraaar purangkatai parri / Mikaththaam varunthi irupparae maelaith / Thavaththaal thavamseyyaa thaar.

Meaning

Those who did not do penance by the strength of former penance look up longing, thinking 'those inside will keep us alive', and finding no way in, they cling to the outer gate and wait in great distress.

Explanation

The picture is of someone standing at a doorway. The hope that those inside will keep him alive turns, when the door does not open, into bare waiting.

The figure is of rebirth: penance left undone in this life leaves one standing at the gate in the next.

The Mahabharata, Mahaprasthanika Parva

The Dog That Walked to the End

From the Mahabharata. At the end of their lives the Pandavas and Draupadi set out to climb the Himalaya toward heaven. A dog joined them on the road. One by one Draupadi, Sahadeva, Nakula, Arjuna and Bhima fell, and only the dog kept walking beside Yudhishthira.

Indra came in his chariot to carry Yudhishthira up, but said the dog could not enter heaven. Yudhishthira refused to abandon a creature that had been faithful to him. Then the dog revealed itself as Dharma. Wealth, kin and even the body drop away on the road; only dharma walks with us to the end.

To reflect on

Standing at the gate is hope; getting inside is penance.
