Meaning

Without swaying between 'today? no, not today? when?', reflect that Death is standing just behind you; give up evil as far as you can, and hold to the virtue of the noble.

Explanation

The hesitation in the first line sounds like a rhythm: today, not today, when. That swaying is the music of never deciding.

The second half is a plain command: give up, hold to. It names in order what to release and what to keep.

To reflect on

One who keeps asking when never begins.
