Meaning

Though one be the red-eyed Māl himself, worshipped by the gods in the sky of that place, they will count any man who has nothing to give them as a plucked tender leaf, and send him away with their own hands folded in a bow.

Explanation

The poem reaches for its highest figure: the red-eyed Māl whom the gods themselves worship. The craft of the verse is in where it puts that height — next to its opposite.

All that eminence is not enough; the only question is whether there is anything to give. If not, two things follow: one is set aside like a leaf plucked from its branch, and the other is being bowed away. That bow is not respect; it is the mask of a refusal. A dismissal dressed in courtesy is the cruellest kind.

To reflect on

A refusal dressed in courtesy is harder to bear than a plain one.
