Meaning

The whole world is one great dream; inside it, the life of these quarrelsome human insects, who eat, sleep, do harm and die, is a dream even within a dream. What use is it for me to think of many things and grieve over this? What will come of thinking about what has gone? Who would die of brooding over what stays a few days and disappears!

Those who have not gained wisdom and renunciation see nothing in this world but sorrow. I do not grieve for what is gone. I have not forgotten what the one of true penance and learning said: it is like casting a fishing line to hook a star that shines in the sky. O Mother, who did all that has come to pass! At least from now on, grant me your grace.

(In another metre) Clarity in the mind, firmness in the heart, a flood of love within, sole sovereignty over the senses, a longing at all times for the path of your great grace, steadiness in karma yoga: grant me these, O one Supreme, without mark or quality, who shines as all things!

Explanation

Here 'Kanavu' ends. The third verse of the preface returns, but this time with a new conclusion: 'What will come of thinking about what is gone?' It is the spirit of 'What is gone will not return' from the songs of wisdom.

'Casting a line to hook a star shining in the sky': seeking lasting joy in the things of the world is like that. The word meen means both star and fish, which makes a lovely double meaning.

The last verse, in another metre, is one of Bharathiyar's best-known prayers. It is addressed to the Nirguna Brahman, 'without mark or quality, which is all things'. He asks for clarity of mind (jnana yoga), firmness of heart and a flood of love (bhakti yoga), mastery of the senses (raja yoga) and steadiness in karma yoga. The four yogas of the Gita come together in a single prayer. He who said in the preface 'I have understood only half the truth' here prays to be granted the rest.
