Meaning
Praising the golden holy feet of the Mother, I will tell here all the truths I know. The ancients said, 'every living being is God'; in the end I accepted that saying. They said it, but did not show it in deed. If one sees the state of Advaita, is there death? The many siddhas the ancients spoke of have all ended, perished and turned to dust.
They are in hollows, it seems; they are somewhere in the bushes of the forest, it seems; they are on the Pothigai hill, it seems; they can be glimpsed here and there for a moment like shadows in lanes and at crossroads, it seems! There is no use in poking a sore wound; the Buddha died of illness, see! Shankaracharya, the brahmin, died; Ramanuja who came after him also passed away!
Jesus died, struck down on the cross; Krishna died by an evil arrow; even Rama, praised by many, went down into the river. But I will stay on this earth without dying, you will see! This truth is plain, you see; I will not lie; even if I die I will not lie to human beings. There is no decline, there is no death! Listen, listen! Shame, worry, anger, falsehood,

Explanation
This is one of Bharathiyar's boldest passages. He says that if one fully realises the Advaita truth 'every living being is God', there is no death. But 'no death' here is not only the deathlessness of the body; it is a life in which the roots of death, fear, worry, anger and falsehood, have been destroyed. The next section explains this.
When Bharathiyar says that the Buddha, Shankara, Ramanuja, Jesus, Krishna and Rama all left the body, he is not belittling them. Krishna leaving the body by the hunter's arrow (Srimad Bhagavatam 11.30) and Rama entering the Sarayu river and returning to Vaikuntha (Uttara Kanda of the Ramayana) are the events by which avatars close their lila. Bharathiyar's question is: can death be overcome while one is still in the body?
The Tamil siddhas spoke of kaya siddhi, the perfection of the body. Thirumoolar urged care of the body: 'if the body perishes, the life perishes.' Bharathiyar mocks the tales told about siddhas ('they live in hollows, it seems'), yet wants to reach their goal himself. Like Nachiketa in the Katha Upanishad, he stands before death and asks his question.

To reflect on
What causes small deaths inside you: timidity, worry, anger or falsehood?
