Meaning

The beauty of a head of hair, the beauty of dyed cloth, the beauty of turmeric are not beauty. The beauty of learning, joined to the balance that says within 'we are good' — that is beauty.

Explanation

Three beauties are refused and one stands. All three are outside; the fourth is within.

'We are good' is not boasting but balance — neither raising nor lowering oneself. That is what makes learning beautiful.

The Chandogya Upanishad

Satyakama Tells the Truth

From the Chandogya Upanishad. The boy Satyakama wished to study the Veda and asked his mother Jabala about his family line. "I do not know," she said. "I served many in my youth. Call yourself Satyakama Jabala."

He went to the teacher Haridrumata Gautama and repeated exactly what she had said. Gautama replied, "Only a true brahmin would speak so honestly. Bring firewood; I will teach you." He sent the boy to tend four hundred thin cows until they became a thousand. In the forest the bull, the fire, a swan and a diver bird each taught him part of Brahman, and he returned with his face shining. Learning begins with honesty, and a true student learns from everything.
