Meaning

Salt born of barren ground the wise rank above paddy from a fertile field. So the learned, though born in the lowest station, are set at the head.

Explanation

Two things are compared: salt from barren ground and paddy from a rich field. What was born in the poorer place is ranked higher.

This is a denial of birth as a measure. What counts is not the quality of the ground but the worth of the thing.

To reflect on

A low place can yield a high thing.
