பொருள்
அறிவு நூலைப் படிக்காமல், உலக நூல்களை மட்டும் ஓதுவதெல்லாம் கலகலப்பான ஒலி மட்டுமே. தடுமாற்றம் தீரும் அளவுக்கு அறிந்தவர் யாரும் இல்லை.
Meaning
Without studying the book of wisdom, all the reading of worldly books is only a clatter of noise. Few there are who know enough to end their confusion.

இங்கே இரண்டு வகை நூல்கள்: அறிவு நூல், உலக நூல். இரண்டையும் வேறுபடுத்திப் பேசுவது நாலடியாரில் அரியது.
'கலகல கூஉம்' என்பது ஒலியின் உருவகம். ஒலி அதிகமாக இருக்கலாம், ஆனால் குழப்பம் தீரவில்லை என்றால் அது வெறும் சத்தம்.
