Meaning

Some cling to the base, thinking 'this man is rich', and live by trailing behind them. But to come upon the noble, born of a good family, is it not like stumbling on a cave filled with every kind of treasure?

Word by word

clinging single-mindedly
following the base
a cave full of treasure
is it not like finding?
when one comes upon the noble

Explanation

The wealth of the base stays with them; their followers get only crumbs. The noble share what they have freely.

So choose whom to follow by character, not by wealth.

To reflect on

Follow the good, not merely the rich.
