Meaning

Bearing all who come in the heat equally, like a tree that gives shade; and like a fruiting tree suffering oneself so that many may enjoy the fruit — that is the duty of a good man.

Explanation

One tree does two things in this verse. Anyone who comes in the heat receives shade; no selection is made. 'Bearing equally' says exactly this — without short measure, without leaning, the same for all.

The second image turns the tree into a fruiting one. The fruit is for many; the weariness for the tree. The verse sets 'suffering oneself' apart in its own phrase, because the one who enjoys the fruit does not see the labour. The duty of a good man is the joining of the two: the bearing for everyone, the suffering for himself.

To reflect on

Shade for all, weariness for oneself.
