Meaning

Even if they mix so fully that all the world knows it, the friendship of the small lasts only a few days. The bond with those who never flag stands firm, once one has reached the way of the steadfast great.

Explanation

The verse compares two friendships directly, but what it compares is not the degree of closeness. 'Even mixing fully so the world knows' gains nothing. The first friendship's lack is not in intimacy but in steadiness. 'A few days' is a precise measure: the hour it will stop is known in advance.

The second friendship is another kind. It comes into being by reaching the way of the great who do not shift from their place. 'Those without slackening' are those who do not tire; the bond with them does not wear down after testing. Friendship does not grow out of how much two people mix, but out of whether both hold their ground.

To reflect on

What holds a friendship is steadiness, not closeness.
