Meaning

The worthy, seeing the submission of an enemy, do not themselves rush forward to finish him. Look: the cobra of dreadful power does not seize the moon while it is still a young crescent.

Explanation

The verse's image comes from the sky. The serpent does not seize the moon while it is a young crescent; it comes for the moon grown full. There is no glory in swallowing a thin sliver.

Now it applies to people. To strike down an enemy who stands with his head bowed is not worth; it is the strong finishing off the weak, and the world blames it. It is when he has risen again to wrestle that the clash is manliness, and only that victory lasts.

The Mahabharata, Vana Parva

Ashtavakra at Janaka's Court

From the Mahabharata. Ashtavakra was born bent in eight places. His father had lost a debate in King Janaka's court to the scholar Bandi and been drowned as the price. When the boy was twelve, he walked into that same court to challenge Bandi.

The courtiers burst out laughing at his twisted body. Ashtavakra laughed back: "I thought this was an assembly of the wise. I see it is a gathering of cobblers, who judge only by the skin." Janaka fell silent. The boy then defeated Bandi in debate and won back his father. Wisdom does not live in the shape of the body, and the wise do not judge by it.

To reflect on

Striking a fallen man is not victory; meeting one who stands is valour.
