வேம்பின் இலையுள் கனியினும் வாழைதன்தீஞ்சுவை யாதும் திரியாதாம் ஆங்கேஇனந்தீ தெனினும் இயல்புடையார் கேண்மைமனந்தீதாம் பக்கம் அரிது.

பொருள்
வேம்பின் இலைகளுக்கு நடுவே வாழை கனிந்தாலும், அதன் தீஞ்சுவை சிறிதும் திரியாது. அதுபோல, சேர்ந்த இனம் தீதாக இருந்தாலும் இயல்புடையாரின் கேண்மை மனம் தீதாகும் பக்கமே சேராது.
Meaning
Though the banana ripens among neem leaves, none of its sweetness turns. So, though the company one keeps is base, the friendship of the well-natured never turns toward an evil mind.

படம் எளிமையானது; அதன் உண்மை ஆழமானது. வேப்பங்காட்டில் வளர்ந்த வாழைக்கும் அதன் சுவை போகாது. மரம் சுற்றத்தைப் பொறுத்தது அன்று; தன் தன்மையைப் பொறுத்தது. சூழல் மாறினால் சுவை மாறும் என்று நாம் அஞ்சுவது பொய் என்று பாடல் சொல்கிறது.
இப்போது மனிதருக்கு. தீய இனத்தாரோடு பழகினாலும், இயல்புடையார் கேண்மை கெடாது. இங்கே 'இயல்பு' என்பது பிறந்த தன்மை மட்டும் அன்று; பழக்கத்தால் வேரூன்றிய பண்பு. அத்தகைய வேருக்கு ஒரு காட்டின் நிழல் பயமல்ல. ஆயினும் பாடல் சொல்வது 'கெடான்' என்று மட்டுமே; 'பழகு' என்று சொல்லவில்லை. தப்பிப்பது பற்றியது, தேடுவது அன்று.
Explanation
The picture is simple; its truth is deep. A banana grown in a grove of neem does not lose its taste. The tree's flavour depends on its own nature, not on its neighbours. We fear that a change of surroundings will change the taste; the verse says that fear is false.
Now to people. Though one keeps base company, the friendship of the well-natured is not spoiled. 'Nature' here is not only what one is born with; it is the character rooted by long habit. Such a root has nothing to fear from a grove's shade. Still, the verse says only that it does not spoil; it does not say, keep such company. It is about what survives, not about what to seek.
