நயவார்கண் நல்குரவு நாணின்று கொல்லோபயவார்கண் செல்வம் பரம்பப் பயின்கொல்வியவாய்காண் வேற்கண்ணாய் இவ்விரண்டும் ஆங்கேநயவாது நிற்கு நிலை.

பொருள்
வேல்போன்ற கண்ணினாளே, நயமுடையார் பக்கத்தில் வறுமை நாணத்தோடு நிற்கிறது; பயன் இல்லாதார் பக்கத்தில் செல்வம் பெருகிப் பரவி நிற்கிறது. இந்த இரண்டும் அங்கே நயவாது நிற்கும் நிலையே.
Meaning
O lady of the spear-like eye, want stands with shame beside those who are worthy, while wealth spreads and swells beside those who put it to no use. Both of them stand in a state that loves neither — and there they are.

பாடலின் படம் இரு இடங்களில் ஒரே முரணைக் காட்டுகிறது. நயமுடையார் பக்கத்தில் வறுமை இருக்கிறது; அது நாணத்தோடு நிற்கிறது. பயன் இல்லாதார் பக்கத்தில் செல்வம் இருக்கிறது; அது பெருகிப் பரவி நிற்கிறது.
இரண்டும் தவறான இடத்தில் நிற்கின்றன என்பது பாடலின் முடிவு. வறுமை நாணியிருப்பது அதன் மானத்தின் அறிகுறி; செல்வம் திமிர்ந்திருப்பது அதன் வீண் என்பதன் அறிகுறி. இந்தச் சீர்கேட்டைப் பாடல் கண்டிக்கிறது; ஆனால் அதைத் திருத்தும் கை மனிதருடையது என்பதை மறைக்கவில்லை.
Explanation
The verse shows one contradiction in two places. Want sits beside the worthy, standing there with shame. Wealth sits beside those who give no fruit, spreading and swelling.
Both are in the wrong place; that is the verse's conclusion. That want stands ashamed is a sign of its honour; that wealth stands proud is a sign that it is wasted. The verse condemns this disorder, and it does not hide the fact that the hand able to set it right is a human one.
