Meaning

Those without understanding do not learn even when taught; those with understanding are as though taught without lessons. The pure do not beg even in poverty; and the rich, if they give nothing to the poor, are themselves the poor.

Explanation

The first two lines turn our idea of learning around. To teach is to tell; to understand is to grow within. Telling does nothing for a man without understanding, and understanding grows in a man even without being told.

Then the verse reverses the direction of wealth. A man of honour does not hold out his hand in poverty, for he is rich in himself. And the man who has wealth and gives none of it to the poor is the poor one. So begging and giving are not decided by the size of a purse but by the state of a mind.

To reflect on

Who is rich and who is poor in the heart is not settled by the size of a purse.
