Meaning

To share what you have cooked, as far as your means allow, with friends and strangers alike: that alone is truly cooking and eating. For worthless men who shut the door and eat their food alone, the door of heaven will be shut.

The Ramayana, Uttara Kanda

The King Who Ate His Own Body

From the Ramayana. In the forest Rama met the sage Agastya, who told him of King Shveta of Vidarbha. Shveta had done great penance and reached heaven, but there he was tormented by hunger and thirst, and each day he had to come down to earth to eat his own dead body.

Brahma explained why: in all his life Shveta had fed his own body with care, but he had never given food or anything else in charity. Nothing given, nothing received. Shveta begged Agastya to accept a divine jewel from him; the sage accepted it, and the king was freed at last. What is never given away is the one thing that cannot nourish us.
