Meaning

As though to say, 'if it were ours we would show them our house; if it were theirs, their honour would be spoiled at the sight', they stand ashamed at the back door and give even a little rice. So forget the company of the rich.

Explanation

The scene takes place at a doorway. A poor man arrives; the rich man does not call him in. He stands at the back and hands over a little rice, and the giving itself is done with shame.

The verse turns that shame into a speech: 'if it were ours we would show our house' is a hollow boast, and 'if it were theirs their honour would be lost' is an excuse that belittles the other. Together they show a mind that cannot even give without performing the gift as a favour. That is why the closing words tell us to forget the company of the rich — not friendship, but a connection that only acts at pity.

To reflect on

A kindness given with contempt is the same as not giving at all.
