Meaning

Even at the very moment of seeing the incapable living in pomp, the mind of a man of honour burns within like a fire that has flared up and taken hold of a forest.

Explanation

The image is fire. When the verse says the mind burns like a forest ablaze, it does not mean anger that shows on the face. It is a glow kept inside, a fire that gives no smoke.

What burns it? The sight of the incapable walking about in pomp. This is not envy; it is honour. Honour is not thinking much of what one has — it is the refusal to be at ease when those without merit are raised above. That burning is the moral eye of a society, and where it goes out, everything else becomes acceptable.

The Mahabharata, Adi Parva

Bhishma's Terrible Vow

From the Mahabharata. King Shantanu fell in love with the fisher-girl Satyavati, but her father would give her only if her sons would inherit the throne. Shantanu already had a heir, the brilliant prince Devavrata, and went home sick at heart.

Devavrata went to the fisherman himself and gave up his right to the throne. When the father asked about Devavrata's own future sons, he vowed never to marry at all. The gods rained flowers and named him Bhishma, "the one of the terrible vow." For the rest of his long life, through every hardship, he never once broke his word. A man's honour lies in the word he will not take back.

To reflect on

The refusal to sit easy when the unworthy rise is a society's moral eye.
