மல்லன்மா ஞாலத்து வாழ்பவ ருள்ளெல்லாம்செல்வ ரெனினும் கொடாதவர் நல்கூர்ந்தார்நல்கூர்ந்தக் கண்ணும் பெருமுத் தரையரே,செல்வரைச் சென்றிரவா தார்.

பொருள்
வலிமை மிக்க பரந்த இவ்வுலகில் வாழ்பவர் எல்லாரும் செல்வராக இருந்தாலும், கொடாதவரே வறியவர்; அந்த வறுமையிலும் பெருமை உடையவரே, செல்வரைச் சென்று இரவாதவர்.
Meaning
Though everyone living in this wide and mighty world were rich, those who give nothing are the poor; and even in that poverty they stand high, who do not go to the rich with a begging hand.

பாடலின் முதல் கூற்று ஒரு மிகைப்படுத்தல் போல் தெரிகிறது: எல்லோரும் பணக்காரராக இருந்தாலும், கொடாதவர் ஏழை. ஆனால் அந்த மிகையில் ஒரு உண்மை இருக்கிறது. செல்வம் கொடுப்பதில் முடிகிறது; கொடுக்காத போது அது வெறும் எண்ணிக்கையாக மாறிவிடுகிறது.

Explanation
The first claim sounds like an exaggeration: even if everyone were rich, those who give nothing are poor. But there is truth inside the exaggeration. Wealth is completed in giving; when it is not given, it turns back into a mere number.
Then the second claim lifts that pauper up again. The one who cannot give becomes a person of standing at the very moment he refuses to ask. Rank is not settled by money here but by how a man keeps his own place. The verse honours a standing, not an amount.
