Meaning

The light of a lamp and the friendship of a courtesan — look into them and the two are not different: the lamplight fails the very moment the oil is gone, and their love fails the very moment the money is gone.

Explanation

The verse sets up a plain pairing: lamplight and oil, their love and money. The light depends on the oil, and when the oil is done the light is done. So the love depends on the money.

The word 'the very moment' is the point — the effect does not wait. The oil goes and the light goes at once; the money goes and the love goes at once. This is not a habit but a reckoning. There is no fault in a lamp going out; that is its nature. The error is in taking it for a morning star. That is the lesson: what hangs on wealth ought not to be called love.

The Bhagavata Purana, Book 11

Pingala Stops Waiting

From the Bhagavata Purana, where the Avadhuta tells King Yadu of his twenty-four teachers. One of them was Pingala, a courtesan of Videha. One night she dressed in her finest and stood at her door, watching every passing man, hoping for a rich lover. No one came. Hour after hour she went in and out, until midnight.

Then, weary, something in her turned. "What a fool I have been, selling myself for men who give only fear and grief, while the one who truly loves me lives within my own heart." She gave up hope of others and slept in peace. The Avadhuta said: "Hope is the greatest misery; giving it up is the greatest happiness." Even in the house of a courtesan, wisdom can dawn.

To reflect on

What hangs on wealth should not be called love; it is a reckoning.
