Meaning

When a lamp is brought in, the darkness dies; so sin does not stand before a man's penance. When the lamp's oil runs out, the darkness rushes back in; so evil stands again when good deeds come to an end.

Explanation

One image moves in two directions: light arrives and darkness flees, oil runs out and darkness returns. The verse's attention is on the fact that light is not permanent.

Penance is the lamp; the oil that keeps it burning is continuous effort. A lamp without oil is not a lamp.

The life of Pattinathar (Tamil Shaiva tradition)

The Needle Without an Eye

From the Tamil Shaiva tradition. Thiruvenkadar was a merchant of Kaveripoompattinam whose ships brought back great wealth. His adopted son, whom he believed to be a gift of Shiva, once returned from a voyage with nothing but cakes of dried cow dung. Furious, the father broke them open and found gems inside.

The son had vanished, leaving a small box. Inside was a needle with a broken eye and a palm leaf: "Even a needle without an eye will not follow you on your last journey." The merchant gave away everything that day and became the saint Pattinathar, whose songs on renunciation are still sung across Tamil Nadu.

To reflect on

The lamp is not permanent; it depends on the oil.
