Meaning

O lord of the cool shore of the teeming sea, where bees hum among the blossoms all day long: for one who knows what truly does good, is the harsh word of a loving friend worse than the sweet word of a stranger who smiles as he speaks? It is not.

Explanation

A loving friend's harsh word is meant for our good; a stranger's sweet word is often mere flattery.

So it is wise to bear a friend's sharpness. Medicine can be bitter and still cure.

To reflect on

A friend's harsh word is bitter medicine.
