Meaning

Even when harm is done, one should grieve over oneself, saying 'let my own gentle conduct not cease'. Letting go of those who have joined one closely is hard even for a beast of the forest.

Explanation

The fault here is not laid on the other but on oneself. When harm comes, the first thing to examine is one's own conduct.

The beast image is strong: the grip of attachment is not peculiar to humans but common to living things.

To reflect on

For another's harm, the first examination is of one's own conduct.
