Meaning

O dweller in the cool land of mountain streams, speak nothing at all with a fool. If a fool speaks, he speaks only to ruin things, so argue as far as you can and then be gone from the dispute.

Explanation

Arguing with a fool is a net. First he forbids it; then, if talk has already begun, he says get out.

Why argue as far as you can? Because total withdrawal is not always possible. Where it is not, the way is to engage as little as the situation allows.

The Bhagavata Purana, Book 10

The Foot on Vishnu's Chest

From the Bhagavata Purana. The sages wished to know which of the three great gods was greatest, and sent Bhrigu to test them. Bhrigu found Vishnu resting and, without a word, kicked him on the chest.

Vishnu rose, bowed, and took the sage's foot in his hands. "Your foot is tender and my chest is hard. Forgive me if it hurt you. The mark of your foot I will wear on my chest forever." Bhrigu returned and told the sages that none was greater than the one whose patience nothing could disturb.

To reflect on

Not answering a fool is itself an argument.
