The Mahabharata, Adi ParvaThe House of Lac
From the Mahabharata. Duryodhana, pretending friendship, invited the Pandavas and Kunti to a festival at Varanavata and had his minister Purochana build them a fine new house to stay in. It was made of lac, resin and ghee, ready to burn.
Vidura saw through the welcome and warned Yudhishthira in a riddle that only he would understand. The Pandavas had a tunnel dug in secret, and on the night Purochana planned to set the fire, they lit it themselves and escaped through the earth. A warm welcome from someone who wishes you harm is the most dangerous house of all.
