Meaning

Where there is no embrace, the pallor rushes in; where there is no lovers' quarrel, love is without salt. On the cool shore of the long lagoon where bright lilies blow and the waves never rest, embracing and then turning away are the very way of love.

Explanation

The first two lines set out two opposite states: without the embrace the body changes, and without the quarrel love loses its salt. Parting is a sickness; a lovers' tiff is the salt in the dish. The poet treats both as parts of nature.

Then comes the seashore: shining lilies, waves that never rest. Movement is the law of that place. So too love that swings between drawing near and turning away is doing only what is natural. A sulk, then, is not to be read as a rupture; it is the swing of affection itself.

The Shiva Purana and Kalidasa's Kumarasambhava

Parvati's Penance

From the Shiva Purana and Kalidasa's Kumarasambhava. Parvati, daughter of the Himalaya, loved Shiva, but he sat lost in meditation. When Kama shot his flower arrow at him, Shiva opened his third eye and burned the god of love to ash. Beauty and desire had failed.

So Parvati left the palace for the mountains and began a penance so fierce that she gave up even eating leaves, earning the name Aparna. One day a young ascetic came and mocked Shiva in front of her: ash-smeared, homeless, wearing snakes. She rose in anger to leave, and the ascetic revealed himself as Shiva and asked for her hand. Love that endures every test is the love that wins.

To reflect on

A lover's tiff is no rupture; it is the natural swing of affection.
