Isaintha sirumai iyalpilaa thaarkan, / Pasaintha thunaiyum parivaam - asaintha / Nakaiyaeyum vaentaatha nallarivi naarkan / Pakaiyaeyum paatu perum.

Meaning

With men of base nature and no character, even a close friendship brings only grief. With men of good understanding, who do not care even for an idle, flattering smile, even enmity brings honour.

Explanation

It matters less whether it is friendship than with whom. Friendship with the base is pain; even enmity with the noble is honour.

Jatayu fell fighting Ravana and still won fame, because he stood on the side of right.

To reflect on

Better a noble enemy than a base friend.
