Meaning

Our Kannamma's smile is a fresh-blown rose; her eye is the blue Indraneela flower; her face is the red lotus; her forehead is the young rising sun.

Our Kannamma's beauty equals lightning; her brows are Manmatha's bows; her thick hair is like a serpent covering the moon; her nose is the sesame flower.

Her auspicious speech is a spring of eternal bliss; her sweet mouth is nectar, her lips nectar; her soft voice like music is Saraswati's veena; in grace she is Rambha, in skill Indrani.

Her two ears are the dwelling of sweet sound; her conch-like throat is a conch of nectar; her auspicious hands are the abode of Mahashakti; her belly is a banyan leaf; her waist the house of nectar.

The strength of her feet is that of Nandi who bears Shankara; her two lotus feet are Lakshmi's seat. The new love and wisdom that overflow and stream in every direction - that is her true sacred form.

Explanation

This is the traditional 'head to foot' description (keshadi-pada) of the divine form, praising the deity limb by limb. Adi Shankara's Saundarya Lahari describes the Mother this way, and in Tamil the Abhirami Andadi does too.

Each simile points to the divine: her hands are the abode of Mahashakti, her voice Saraswati's veena, her feet Lakshmi's seat, her belly the banyan leaf - recalling the child Krishna who sleeps on a banyan leaf. So Kannamma becomes Parashakti, in whom all goddesses are one.

The last line gives the meaning of the whole description: her 'true sacred form' is not a body but the love and wisdom that stream in every direction. Reaching the formless through worship of form is the way of our tradition.

To reflect on

'New love and wisdom are her true form' - if God's real form is love and wisdom, where do you see it in people?
