Meaning

Let us hail the Shakti of Madhava, the gem that grows on the red lotus. Enough of all this poverty! A mind that suffers at every hour in the smoke of meanness, a weary intellect that makes even the lofty Veda distasteful - this torment is unbearable. Let us take refuge at the two feet of Mother Lakshmi.

The insults of base men, the company of those who have lost their work, every effort ending in ruin like a lamp sunk in a well, running across the seven seas and finding no way to gain anything - down with this cruel disease! Is not poverty a cruelty in this world?

She was born in the Milk Ocean and has the nature of the good nectar it yielded; she rests her paired flower-feet on a fitting lotus; she has four hands, and in those four many kinds of wealth; her dark eyes are like spears; her body is red; she loves greenness (plenty).

She is forever joined in love on Narayana's chest. In the festooned pandal, in the cowshed, in the mansion of shining gems, on the shoulders of heroes, in the work of those who labour till their bodies sweat, and on the head of Mother Bharata, she sits in grace spreading light.

She lives in gold and gems, in fragrant flowers, sandal paste and lamps, in the laughter of maidens, in rich forest, grove and field, in forward-pressing courage, in the faces of kings - praising that Lakshmi again and again and hailing her flower-feet, let us attain the good state.

In the minerals within the earth, in the wealth of the mountains, in the depths of the wide sea, in holy sacrifice, in lofty fame, in intellect and newness, in a well-made statue, in good song, dance and painting - the Goddess dwells there; let us establish her on our tongues and in our minds.

In the victorious army, in the shop of those who know many skills, in the conduct of good austerity, in the honeyed phrases of good poets - praising daily with joy the Mother of red fortune who is there, let us rise; let us end the Kali age so that all the arts we have learned receive the good light of her mercy.

Explanation

The first two stanzas are the real experience of poverty. 'A lamp sunk in a well' - effort that burns but gives light to no one - is what Bharathiyar lived through himself. 'Is not poverty a cruelty?' echoes Tiruvalluvar's couplet: 'What is more painful than poverty? Only poverty itself.'

The third stanza is the Puranic Lakshmi: born at the churning of the Milk Ocean, standing on the lotus, four-handed, dwelling on Narayana's chest - the form described in the Sri Suktam and the Vishnu Purana.

But what is special in the song comes after. Where does Lakshmi live? Not only in mansions, but in the cowshed, 'in the work of those who labour till they sweat', in the shop, the army, the statue, the song, the dance, the painting, in newness. Labour, art, knowledge and courage are the true homes of wealth. 'On the head of Bharati' - Mother India - means the prosperity of the nation is also Lakshmi's grace.

To reflect on

Bharathiyar says Lakshmi lives 'in the work of those who labour till they sweat'. Can you see your own labour as worship?
