Meaning

First - love of Saraswati: Even in childhood I was entranced by her womanhood. Though my mind did not take to school studies, seeing her alone on a couch of white flowers - her veena and hand, her blossoming face, the nectar of meaning she speaks - I lost my innocent heart, Mother!

When I came along playing, she would stand at a street corner with a book in her hand, reading its words sweetly. If I went near, she would delight me with many wisdoms. If I said 'Let us be together today', she would go off with a smile in the corner of her eye.

On a riverbank, in a lonely mandapam, I sat enjoying the south wind; there she brought and gave me a maiden poem. Accepting it with joy I praised her: 'Come, agree and marry me' - and she bloomed into a young smile and vanished.

Did my mind ever weaken? My longing for the goddess of the arts grew like madness; by day my talk and by night my dreams were fixed on her - was there any other desire? Till the age of twenty-two I held fast to love for the white goddess of music, Mother!

Second - love of Lakshmi: In this state, in a garden of delight, another beauty came and stood. Seeing the beauty of her radiant face, I gave my mind as tribute. She said her name was Sentiru. From that day I long to embrace her with all my heart.

If she smiles, I am happy all that day; if she stands before me and looks a while, my head spins with longing. Then, finding who knows what fault, she ignores me and goes; and my mind scatters in pieces and my heart is worn down.

On forest paths, in mountain views, at waterfalls, in many country places, in some shining mansions in the city, among some hunters, with some heroes and kings - she comes again; and in the wonder of seeing her, joy rises.

Third - love of Kali: Then one night a beauty of dark womanhood came before my eyes. Thinking it a maiden's form, I went near with delight and looked - it was the Mother's form! She is Adi Parashakti Devi! We need her sweet grace! Then everything in the world will come under our power!

Riches will pour in; clear knowledge will come and many good things will follow. She who stands night and day within these countless crores of things and moves the bow, she who does all this work, she who ends our troubles - let us sing her hymns and worship her every day!

Explanation

This song is like Bharathiyar's spiritual autobiography: the three goddesses came into his life as three stages. In childhood his mind did not go to school studies (history records he was not a strong student), but he was mad about poetry; at Ettayapuram he received the title 'Bharati' at about eleven. Till twenty-two he loved Saraswati.

Then Lakshmi - wealth - came. But she is fickle: she smiles, then ignores him and goes. We can see in this the alternating poverty and small comfort of his whole life. She comes in forests, waterfalls, among hunters and heroes - nature's bounty, labour and courage are the gateways of wealth.

Last comes Kali. She came as a beloved, but drawing near he cries, 'It is the Mother's form!' This one line holds the secret of the song: all love finally leads to the Mother. She is the one who 'stands within countless crores of things and moves the bow' - the Shakti that moves everything from within. Hold her, and Saraswati and Lakshmi follow of themselves - 'everything in the world will come under our power'. That is why Bharathiyar thought of himself first as a Shakta.

To reflect on

Art, then wealth, then the Mother - which stage of 'love' is your life in now?
