Meaning

O mind! There is victory; there is no fear. In this very birth there is freedom; there is firm standing.

There is fruit from devotion; there are the feet of our family-goddess Shakti, impressed in the heart, as refuge; there is no enmity.

There are shoulders like hills, and on them the golden feet of Shakti. All our observances are nothing but remembrance of Shakti. There is a path, there is a goal, there is divine frenzy for our Kula Shakti.

There is intelligence that gathers wealth; there is divine strength that drives out evil; there is order; there is fruit for work; there is no lack. For the false sea of sorrow there is the shaft in Kumaran's hand.

Over the wave-tossed sea, by the boat called Shakti's grace, crossing the distance and reaching the shore, free of sorrow, released, made bold, we touch our heads to the feet of Kula Shakti.

Explanation

'There is victory, there is no fear, O mind' is among Bharathiyar's most famous lines. The whole song resounds with 'undu' - 'there is': victory, freedom, steadiness, fruit, strong shoulders, a path, intelligence, strength. The negatives - fear, enmity, lack - 'are not'. It is a song of affirmation.

'Kula Shakti' carries two meanings: Shakti as the family deity, and in Shakta Tantra the Kundalini Shakti that sleeps within the body ('kula-kundalini'). 'Freedom in this very birth' is the faith that liberation need not be postponed to another life but can be reached now.

The image of the last charanam - crossing the sea of births in the boat of Shakti's grace - recalls the Tirukkural, 'They swim the great sea of births who reach the Lord's feet; others cannot', and the Vedantic idea of the 'bhava sagara'.
